Tips For Packing Fragile and Valuable Items For Your San Diego Move

You can save money on the total cost of your San Diego move if you pack some or all of your items. However many San Diego moving customers are apprehensive about packing their own fragile or valuable items. There is no need to be if you follow this guide and use some basic common sense.

Fragile and valuable items would include china, breakables, small collectables, and other items that have a high dollar value, are difficult to replace and/or have personal value.

First, before packing your fragile and valuable items for your San Diego move, make sure you have the proper packing supplies.

Generally you should have the following items at your disposal for packing of your fragile and valuable items:

  1. boxes
  2. tape
  3. plastic bags
  4. labels
  5. tissue
  6. unprinted newsprint
  7. rubber bands
  8. thick marker pens.

Boxes should be new, strong, corrugated cartons with tops or flaps that fold shut so you can entirely close and tape the box. Do not use used boxes or boxes from grocery stores. Boxes from grocery stores can contain pests or their larvae or eggs which will travel to you to your new home. Not a good idea! The best cartons for fragile items are dishpaks. These cartons are thicker then regular boxes thus providing extra protection for their journey.

Plastic bags are great for holding parts. Once the parts are in the bag, label it with your marking pen and place the parts bag in the box.

Tissue paper and unprinted newsprint are staples of the professional San Diego mover. You can get them from any moving supply source. The tissue paper is in larger sheets then facial tissue but is of a similar quality.

To begin, prepare a dishpak by taping the bottom of the carton. Turn the box over and lay some sheets of unprinted newsprint along the bottom for extra protection.

To pack china, dishes and similar items for your San Diego move, wrap each piece individually in sheets of unprinted newsprint. After you wrap the first, wrap up to 2 more, then put them on top of each other and wrap the group with unprinted newsprint to make a bundle. Place that bundle in the dishpak and repeat. Make sure you place each bundle in a row along the bottom on the edges of the dishes. Do not place the bundles flat on top of each other. This is not as safe.

Stemware such as wineglasses need to be individually wrapped with unprinted newsprint. Simply put the stemware on top of the unprinted newsprint and start to roll the stemware around the sheet of unprinted newsprint. Make sure you stuff the inside of the glass with the newsprint for added protection. Then carefully place the wrapped stemware into the dishpak. For extra protection you can roll up sheets of unprinted newsprint and put the wads into the box for extra cushioning.

When packing small statues and collections for your San Diego move, extra care is important. Lay out the unprinted newsprint on a flat surface. Put the statue in the middle. Use a piece or two of the tissue paper and wrap that around things that are protruding such as arms in a figurine, or anything else that could break off.

After the tissue is wrapped around the figurine use a small rubber band to hold the tissue in place. Once protected you can now wrap the figurine in unprinted newsprint and place it carefully into the dishpak.

Make sure you label each dishpak “Fragile“. You may also want to list what is in each box. If you are using professional San Diego movers for your moving, you may want to point out the dishpaks with the fragile items in them. This allows the San Diego movers to take extra care of these items/boxes.
